Shot Handout: 01, for realzies.

All of the scene files (except for Joanna Shim's) have been uploaded onto the Sleepless FTP.
In case you have forgotten the account password info, the post can be found HERE.

Sleepless ftp -> o3_CleanUpScenes -> Sleepless_Seq03 -> your shot assignment

Below are some low-rez quicktimes of the tied-down shots.  The name above each shots is the clean-up artist responsible for that shot this week.

Josh Dresner: Sleep_03_07_JD01

Ben Arthur: Sleep_03_03_BA01

Joanna Stopyra: Sleep_03_06_JS01

Dailies 01: Turn In

The resolution on the blogger video is rather low so I'm trying to decide how to post these...  Vimeo maybe?  Any suggestions.

In any case, all of the tests are up on the ftp.

Dailies 01: First official clean-up dailies!

Attended:  Michael Vickner, Ben Arthur, Josh Dresner, Joanna Shim

Hi Everyone,

It looks like we're getting off to a great start. Nice work everyone!  Seriously, nice way to kick it off.  :)
An additional nice surprise is that Joanna Shim will be joining the clean-up team as well.  (Joanna Stopyra and Joanna Shim, would you guys happen to have nicknames you prefer?)

We started off by looking over all the test shots.  The best thing for me was that by looking at everyone's shots, I think we're all going to work really well together.  I'll upload everyone's animation tests onto the blog as well as the ftp.
The main points discussed were:

  • I'm going to update the character packet on the ftp to include detailed information about the number of hair puffs and hair spikes on both Camella and Jamal.
  • Make sure everyone is clear on which pencil colors to use for each part of the character (putting together a video demo)
  • Make sure everyone is clear on how to use the fill color & close their vector lines as well as some other tidbits. (putting together a video demo)
  • Pencil thickness:  min: 0, max: 7. In terms of line weight, Ben's line-weight was really nice in terms of thick-to-thin and consistency.  Josh's test had line-weight that was a little too heavy in parts.  If anyone is having trouble going too thick, just give it a slightly smaller max brush size (maybe a 5 instead of a 7).  Ben was given some tweaks to his test shot and asked to final it.
  • Joanna Stopyra's test has nice line-work, we just need to fix some vector intersections.
  • Andriy's test has nice line-work and we need to work on vector intersections and fill colors.
  • Joanna Shim's test had some really nice ear shapes.
  • The overall final look is reminiscent of cell-painted animation which is a good direction to be going in.
  • You don't need to use the same exact number of layers for the clean-up as was used in the tie-down.  Do whatever you need to, to get the final layered look you want.
  • By tomorrow I will try to have everyone's shot to clean-up for this week up on the ftp.  I will email everyone individually when their shot is ready to go. I've already handed off shots to Josh and Ben.
  • If anyone finishes their shot with time to spare this week, let me know, and I will give you another shot to work on.
Those were the main points that I can recall.
Awesome sauce!  Ultimately, I'd like to attempt to have this film done by May.  True, it's a lot of work, but it would be great to have a final, finished product at the end of the semester before everyone separates for the summer.  Momentum is a powerful thing.  Then we can figure out which film festivals to submit it to and everyone can add it to their reels and resumes. woo-hoo!

If you have any questions, please feel free to ask.  See you next week! ~ Lauren

First assignment uploaded to the FTP

Took me a little longer to set everything up than anticipated but it looks like things are working now.

Access the ftp server using the log-in info I posted HERE.
Go ahead and download:
Sleepless_CleanUpTest.zip  &  the 'CleanUpTest_Resources' Folder.

They can be found in the '03_CleanUpScenes' folder.

If you look around the ftp, I uploaded an updated character packet with the color map included as well as some Toon Boom shortcuts I find helpful.  In addition, there are some other production-related odds and ends on there that I thought were relevant.

FTP (file transfer protocol) Access

FTP Account Info:
FTP Server:     laurenkvalheim.com
User name:      sleepless@laurenkvalheim.com
Password:        sleepycamel

FTP is short for 'File Transfer Protocol'.
It's really just a way to say that you're transferring data to and from a host server.  To connect to the server, your computer needs to have an internet connection although we won't be using any browsers.
I took some screen grabs to walk the PC users through how to access the ftp server.

To start:
Go to your 'Computer'.

In the pathway at the top
Type in:        ftp://laurenkvalheim.com
Hit 'Enter'.
Input the Account info, in this case:
User name:      sleepless@laurenkvalheim.com
Password:        sleepycamel
Hit: 'Enter'

Voila!  You now have access to the Sleepless Clean-up Resource Folder.
This is where I'll be storing files for the group that can be accessed via internet.  When we have the network account at the school, I'll set up that as well since downloading files from the internet can be tedious.

Color development

These are a bit old, but thought it may be of interest.  Lynisha Perkins has been handpainting these gouache paint on black board color thumbnails. The image quality isn't that great because they were just some images snapped with a smartphone camera at one of our meetings but you get the idea. She's been doing a great job dealing with my odd requests.
